CSP Organizes 1st Philippine National Inter-Collegiate Programming Contest

The Computing Society of the Philippines will hold the First Philippine National Inter-Collegiate Programming Competition (Phil. ICPC 2007) on October 20, 2007 (Saturday) at De La Salle University-Canlubang.

This event is affiliated with the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest (ACM ICPC) and is a preliminary event to the Asia Regional ICPC to be held in Singapore on December 13-14, 2007.

1st Asia-Pacific Informatics Olympiad (APIO '07)

The 1st Asia-Pacific Informatics Olympiad (APIO '07) was held last May 12, 2007.

There were 359 participants from 14 countries in the Asia-Pacific: Australia, Bangladesh, China, Chinese Taipei (Taiwan), India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Macau, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, and Thailand. The contestants from India and New Zealand sat unofficially so they were not eligible for awards.

The top six competitors from each country became the official teams who were eligible for awards.

All the top 6 participants from China got GOLD certificates.

For the SILVER certificates, here is the breakdown:

6 participants from Korea
2 participants from Japan
1 participant from Singapore
1 participant from Chinese Taipei (Taiwan)
1 participant from Bangladesh

For the BRONZE certificates, the tally is given below:

8 participants from Thailand (the top 6 from Thailand were shared by 3 contestants)

1 from Sri Lanka
2 from Australia
3 from Singapore
2 from Japan
1 from Macau
1 from Indonesia

The lowest number of points to earn a BRONZE certificate is 145 pts.

The TOP 5 PARTICIPANTS from the PHILIPPINES are as follows:

Note: Jared Asuncion and Alberto de Villa tied for first spot in the the Phillippine Site of the APIO '07 Contest.

The Philippine Site of the APIO '07 was organized by the Computing Society of the Philippines and the Department of Information Systems and Computer Science of Ateneo de Manila University with Dr. Rafael Saldaña as the contest director.

CSP Statement on Dr. Gerardo Trinidad

(Note: Dr. Gerardo S. Trinidad passed away on 6 July 2007 in Melbourne, Australia.)

On behalf of the Computing Society of the Philippines (CSP), we would like to express our condolences to the family of Dr. Gerardo S. Trinidad.
Gerry (as we fondly call Dr. Trinidad) has made a great contribution not only to the Computing Society of the Philippines but also to the information and communications technology (ICT) community in general.
He was a founding member of the Computing Society of the Philippines and was one of the members of CSP’s Board of Trustees. He produced the first CSP newsletter and became an associate editor of the Philippine Computing Journal (PCJ), the official publication of the CSP.
Gerry was very generous with his time and talents. He readily agreed to referee articles and papers for the PCJ and the Philippine Computing Science Congress (PCSC), the annual convention of the CSP.
Although based in Melbourne, Australia, Gerry shared his research expertise to Filipino computer science students and academics. He was the Ph.D. thesis adviser of Dr. Caslon Chua, dean of the College of Computer Studies of De La Salle University and Vice-President of the CSP.
Gerry certainly contributed substantially to our efforts in developing
computer science education and research in the Philippines. His dedication and commitment to CSP and our cause is something we will never forget. Because of his place in CSP and the Philippine computing community, as well as being one of our foremost, or maybe our foremost supporter in the
international community, he will be very difficult to replace.
We mourn the loss of our colleague, Dr. Gerardo Trinidad, and we pray for his everlasting peace.
